What Is Raw Beeswax Used For? A Complete Guide

From candle making to skincare, straight from the same hives behind our honey.

One-pound blocks of raw California beeswax display in San Diego boutique

What Is Raw Beeswax?

Raw beeswax is the natural wax bees build their comb from, and ours comes from the same sources as our honey. Most of it comes from fruit and vegetable farms across California's Central Valley, the state's breadbasket, with a smaller amount from our own hives and a handful of trusted partner locations.

The comb arrives to us raw, which means it still carries the typical debris you'd expect from a working hive. We strain it to clean it up, and we keep that process as minimal as possible. We gently warm the raw wax and let gravity do the work. Over time it separates into layers, and we take only the purest layer for our one-pound molds. Nothing is added. Nothing is sprayed. Every tool and piece of equipment we use is food grade.

The result is beeswax that stays as close to its natural state as possible, with very little left behind in the way of impurities. That's what lets one block move between food use, cosmetics, and craft projects without any extra processing required.

If you visit our boutique in Old Town San Diego, you can actually smell the purity of it. It's a simple, comforting aroma, nothing like the scent of a candle store. That's raw beeswax doing what it naturally does.

Common Uses for Beeswax

A single block of raw beeswax covers a wider range of projects than most people expect. Here's where it shows up most:

Candle Making

Beeswax burns cleaner and longer than paraffin, with a natural, subtle honey scent that never needs added fragrance.

Skincare & Salves

Beeswax locks in moisture and forms the base of a good salve. Our Plain & Simple Beeswax Salve is just two ingredients: pure beeswax and California organic olive oil.

Wood & Leather Conditioning

A thin coat of raw beeswax conditions and protects wood surfaces and leather goods, sealing out moisture without any synthetic additives.

Crafts & Making

From wax wraps to art projects to sealing wax, raw blocks give makers full control over quantity, color, and melt point.

Prefer to learn hands-on? We run a Beeswax Salve Making Workshop at our Old Town boutique for small private groups of 2 to 4 guests. You'll leave with your own salve and a real feel for how the wax behaves. And if you just want a salve made and ready to go, our 2 oz tin and pocket-sized sliding tin are built for that.

How to Choose Quality Beeswax

Not all beeswax on the market is treated the same way, and the difference matters depending on what you're using it for.

Food-grade beeswax is handled with food-safe equipment from start to finish and is clean enough to use on skin, in cosmetics, or anywhere it might contact food, like wraps or cheese coatings. Craft-grade beeswax is often processed with less oversight and may carry more debris or be filtered using solvents, which is fine for some projects but not something you'd want near skin or food.

Our beeswax is food-grade across the board, whether you're buying one block for a home candle project or a hundred for a workshop. We don't run two separate lines, one clean and one not. It's all the same minimally processed wax, gravity-separated and ready to use straight out of the package.

Shop Raw Beeswax by the Pound

Our California Raw Beeswax comes in convenient one-pound blocks, so you buy exactly what your project needs instead of committing to a bulk minimum you don't need. Most wholesale beeswax sellers require a 50-pound minimum just to unlock a decent rate. We don't.
