Conflict-Free Honey
Conflict-Free Honey: Our Agricultural Varietals
Every jar in this collection comes from honeybees doing genuine agricultural work — a real pollination-for-forage trade, not competition with San Diego's native bee population.
That distinction is the whole point. Honeybees are extraordinary managed livestock, but a hive dropped in a backyard or a low-forage neighborhood isn't pollinating anything that matters — it's just out-competing the region's 700+ native bee species for scarce resources. The same colony placed in an orange orchard, a watermelon field, an avocado grove, or a cherry orchard is doing work our food system actually depends on. That's conflict-free honey: honey where the bees earned their keep.
Every varietal below comes from hives working active agricultural bloom — orchards and fields where honeybee pollination is a documented part of how the crop gets grown.
"There's no agricultural trade-off. There's just displacement." — unless the bees are actually doing the job.
Orange Blossom Honey
Light, floral, and unmistakably citrus. Our orange honey comes from hives placed directly in California orange orchards during bloom — the same pollination that puts oranges on grocery shelves. Shop Orange Honey →
California Watermelon Honey
Watermelon has no backup plan for pollination — no wind, no self-pollinating trick, just insects. University of Florida researchers have found each flower needs eight or more honeybee visits to set a well-formed melon. This honey is a direct byproduct of that work in California watermelon fields. Shop Watermelon Honey →
California Avocado Honey
Avocado pollination is a team effort — wasps, flies, beetles, and wild bees all play a part — but California growers commonly bring in rented honeybee colonies during bloom specifically to improve fruit set. Our avocado honey comes from hives doing exactly that job. Shop Avocado Honey →
California Cherry Honey
Cherry trees bloom for just seven to eight days, and orchard research shows most of that pollination now falls to managed honeybees as wild bee populations have declined. This honey is what's left over once the orchard's done its work. Shop Cherry Honey →
Curious how we decide what counts as conflict-free — and why "local" isn't automatically the more responsible choice? Read the full breakdown on Queen's Court, or visit Bee San Diego to learn about our native bee conservation work.
