Having a business does not mean everything has to conclude with a transaction. A healthy business is maintained by a healthy community and ecosystem. I feel everything is connected, and a business is responsible for doing its part to give as much as it takes. The boutique started as just a place where people buy honey but has evolved into a defiance of what it means to be a honey brand. San Diego has hundreds of restaurants, dozens of farmers markets, and more artisan food brands than most cities twice its size. What it did not have, for a long time, was a dedicated honey boutique in San Diego with a permanent home, a full range of varietals, and the kind of education that turns a casual buyer into someone who actually understands what they are purchasing.
Farmers markets have honey vendors. Grocery stores have honey. But a vendor at a weekend market cannot give you a guided tasting. A grocery store shelf cannot explain the difference between a California Eucalyptus honey and buckwheat honey, or why that difference matters, or how the bees made that distinction. The transaction happens but the understanding does not. That gap costs people something, even if they do not know it is missing.
A honey boutique in San Diego, a real one, with roots and a reason to exist, was always going to require someone willing to build it from a different set of values. Not just curation for its own sake. Something with a point of view about what honey actually is, where it comes from, and what our relationship to it says about how we treat the land and the communities around us.

SAVAGE BEE-CHES is not a name that came from a branding exercise. It came from exactly the kind of place names come from when they mean something: a specific person with a specific perspective who was not interested in softening it for mass appeal.
I am a Black woman. A veteran. The daughter of immigrants who built a life in Brooklyn. I have a background in systems engineering, which means I have spent my career asking how things actually connect, where the pressure points are, and what happens when a system is out of balance. I brought all of that to honey. I bring a perspective that most people in the indsutry simply can't see.

The defiance is on two fronts. Personal and industry-facing. On the personal side, opening a honey boutique as a Black veteran woman in San Diego is its own statement. The honey industry, like most of the commercial food world, does not reflect the full range of people who interact with food systems, who are shaped by socioeconomics, nature, agriculture, and who bear the cost when ecosystems degrade. I am not going to pretend that context does not exist. It exists and it is part of why this boutique was built the way it is.
On the industry side, the defiance is about honesty. The conventional honey market has spent decades telling consumers that honey is a commodity: that the variety does not matter, that the label is decoration, that sustainability is something you say in a press release and not something you build your actual business model around. SAVAGE BEE-CHES exists in direct opposition to that. We carry 25+ honey varietals, including some you cannot find anywhere else in San Diego and even California, because variety is the whole point. Every varietal is a story about a place, a bloom, a beekeeper, and a choice about what we value.

Why Old Town
Old Town San Diego is the oldest part of the city. It carries history in a way that most of San Diego, a place that can sometimes feel like it was built last Tuesday, does not. There is weight here. A sense that this ground has meant something to people for a long time, across different cultures and different eras, and that what you build here is in conversation with all of that whether you acknowledge it or not.

SAVAGE BEE-CHES is at 2802 Juan Street, Suite 19, because Old Town is a neighborhood with foot traffic from locals and visitors, with a community character that is genuinely mixed, and with the kind of energy that supports a boutique built around curiosity and discovery rather than convenience. People come to Old Town to experience something. That is exactly the kind of person I want walking through the door.
The Old Town San Diego boutique is also where San Diego's agricultural and ecological story is closest to the surface. This city sits in one of the most biodiverse bee habitats anywhere in the continental United States. Over 700 native bee species call San Diego County home. That is not a statistic you encounter in most neighborhoods. It is one you feel when you understand what the land around you actually supports. Building a boutique that takes that seriously, in Old Town, felt right in a way that is hard to articulate and easy to feel when you are inside the space.

Walk in and the first thing you notice is the honey. Over 25 raw honey varietals sourced from Hawaii, California, Oregon, and the high desert. Single-origin. Small batch.
